We’ve found that most of the woman fitness guides available online or in stores fall into two categories:

  1. Simple (and usually very short) rehashes of exercise routines you’ve seen described for years; you’ve probably tried them yourself at one time or another, without getting much benefit. These are usually described as “innovative” programs.
  2. Encouragement to exercise as long and as hard as you possibly can, without any rhyme or reason to the actual workouts and without any attention paid to the way a body will react to that type of drastic exercise. These are usually described as “motivational” programs.

The diet programs you’ll find from self-styled body sculpting gurus also fall into two primary categories:

  1. Rewrites of common diet plans that have been around forever, like the Atkins diet, the Zone diet, the Mediterranean diet, the Grapefruit diet – you know the list.
  2. Exhortations to essentially starve yourself, so that “your body will start burning its stored fat.”

Let’s be honest. Fitness guides that only present recycled exercise and diet plans aren’t going to help anyone who’s already been trying to lose weight for a while. Chances are good that you’ve already tried all of those “groundbreaking” plans in the past.

And sure, starving yourself and working out like a maniac will probably help you lose some of the weight you’d like to take off while improving the look of your body. But you don’t need an “expert guide” to tell you that. It’s simple common sense.

Since each of the components comes with its own downloadable PDF format eBook, we’ll take a look at them individually starting with the BBG workout pdf guide.

Kayla’s workouts are smartly designed. You do have to exercise for six days per week – but only for half an hour per day. And you alternate the type of work that you’re doing each day, so the routine doesn’t get old or stale. In fact, once you start to see results, you may start looking forward to exercising.

For three days out of the week, the workout is based on high-intensity interval training: squats, jumping rope, pushups and similar exercises, each done for just seven minutes apiece to minimize boredom.

The Kayla Itsines PDF guide fully explains and illustrates each of the exercises so you know that you’re doing them the proper way. On the other three days, you’re doing low-intensity activities that you can choose yourself, like walking or running, yoga or biking, or hopping on a treadmill or elliptical machine.

Even taking group exercise classes is acceptable for these days. And you’re allowed to vary the low-intensity activities, so that also helps prevent things from getting stale.

One of the concepts in the BBG program that made a lot of sense to us is that you can ramp up slowly while working muscles which probably haven’t seen much stress or strain in a while.

The initial month of exercises are “dumbed-down” versions of the ones you’ll do later on in the main workout, letting you build your stamina so that you can tackle the more strenuous versions once you get to week five of the guide and you’re strong enough to handle them.

This approach continues throughout the rest of the Bikini Body Guide; you’re progressively challenged more and more, as you round into shape and are ready to go all-out. Our testers never experienced the sense of burnout that’s common when undertaking a fitness program which depends on the same exercises, day after day, week after week.

BBG Program 2.0​;

If you choose to move on to the BBG workout guide for weeks 12 and beyond (known as BBG 2.0) you’ll find that you’re getting into a serious, pro-level exercise program which will have a major impact on your fitness and your body.

It can be tough at times, but the first twelve weeks get you ready for the challenge. BBG 2.0 still only requires 30 minutes per day, but incorporates tougher resistance exercises focused largely on the use of foam rollers.

These exercises not only let you build new, lean muscle, but greatly help with rehab and muscle recovery from the more difficult workouts. The entire plan is very well thought-out.

There’s one important fact which could be a drawback to the Bikini Body Guide workouts in some people’s eyes: you can’t do the exercises without having some exercise equipment available. You’ll need;

  • a bench (although you can use a chair or low table if it will support your weight),
  • a jump rope,
  • and dumbbells.
  • (You also need a foam roller for BBG 2.0).

None of those is overly expensive (you can get all of them for well under $50 total, or even less if you buy used equipment), and you can of course do the workouts at a gym if you prefer not to lay out the money. Even so, this may be a negative for some.

We’re often offended when we look at diets which supposedly will help women lose weight and stay in shape. That’s because we’re not stupid, so we understand that the panacea being pushed by the snake oil salesmen selling these diets – near-starvation – will only lead to failure.

Even if you don’t get sick on a lot fewer calories than your body needs, you’ll get so discouraged by being hungry all the time that you’ll give up.
